Tom Colthurst co-directs the Addiction Technology Transfer Center in the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), supported by a grant from the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. In 1995, Mr. Colthurst assumed associate directorship of the Higher Education Center on Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention, a U.S. Department of Education contract project with components at Education Development Center, Harvard School of Public Health, and UCSD. He is also active in the Silver Gate Group, a private California corporation dedicated to research, education, and publishing.

Since 1984, Tom's UCSD responsibilities have included: organizing periodic research and policy conferences; programming continuing education for public and professional audiences; and launching the quarterly magazine Prevention File: Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drugs (now published through the Silver Gate Group). In August 1995, Mr. Colthurst directed the 37th International Congress on Alcohol and Drug Dependence under the auspices of the International Council on Alcohol and Addictions (ICAA), hosted at UCSD.

With Barbara Ryan and Lance Segars, he is coauthor of the College Alcohol Risk Assessment Guide (UCSD, 1994).

Mr. Colthurst is a graduate of the University of San Francisco (Political Science, 1968) and San Diego State University (Master of Public Administration, 1974). Before joining UCSD, he worked in a succession of management positions with the County of San Diego, including Health Services, Social Services, and Park Development.
